All pottery imported by Bella Stanza is hand-made and hand-painted.
Our ceramics are all lead free and for food use. We do not recommend putting items in the microwave or conventional oven.
The ceramics we imported are defined as Majolica. To be considered such, an item must be made of European red clay. After the item dries and is fired the first time, it is dipped in a white, chalky coating over which the design is painted entirely freehand with lead-free mineral glazez; it is then fired again to bring out the colors of the various minerals. The finished product is Majolica.
A TRADITION OF ITALIAN CERAMICS
Majolica is a traditional Italian pottery. The clay's white background comes from a tin oxide which has been in use for hundreds of years.
Unlike other art forms such as paintings or tapestries, the decoration remains unfaded, just as it was when it left the potter's workshop.
One of the major production centers during the Renaissance was the central region of Italy, known today as Tuscany.
The Majolica pottery carried here at Bella Stanza is derived from the same materials (clay from Tuscany), techniques and traditions that artisans crafted in Italy five hundred years ago.
This may sound simple, but putting a design on a chalky surface with glazez of various consistencies is very difficult, and there is no room for a mistake, or the piece is ruined.
